The El Umiti Foundation, through Data Lab, is pleased to announce the 1+1 Research Fellow Grant. This opportunity is designed to empower early-career Kazakhstani researchers by supporting original research through an international residency. We are seeking proposals that align with Data Lab’s current agenda: "Governance in Kazakhstan (1990–2019): Institutions, Reforms, and State-Building."

To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
  • Academic Standing: Must hold a PhD or be in the 3rd or last year of doctoral studies in political science, public policy, or public management/administration.
  • Language Proficiency: A strong command of the English language is required
  • Research Alignment: The proposed research topic must fall strictly within the given thematic area.

Funding & Duration

Selected fellows will receive comprehensive financial support:
  • Full international airfare and a monthly living stipend (adjusted based on the cost of living in the host country) will be covered.
  • There are no application fees or hidden charges for participants.
  • The fellowship duration is up to 2 months.

Timeline

Application deadline: May 10, 2026 (23:59). Selection decisions will be communicated within 3 weeks of the deadline.

How to Apply: A Two-Step Process

Please note that the El Umiti grant is contingent upon the candidate securing an independent invitation from the host institution.

Step 1: The researcher must independently obtain a formal invitation for a research fellowship at the host institution. El Umiti does not arrange placements; the candidate is responsible for initiating and completing this process on their own.

Step 2: Once the invitation has been obtained (or the process initiated), the candidate must submit an application to the El Umiti Foundation via this form to be considered for sponsorship. Apply via the link.

Working Paper (20–30 pages) to be published in the Data Lab Working Paper Series, OR a draft journal article submitted for peer review;
