Turning Points in the History of Independent Kazakhstan

NINE TURNING POINTS

The volume traces Kazakhstan’s transformation from the final years of the Soviet Union through the formative decades of independent statehood.

The discussions explore the collapse of the USSR and Kazakhstan’s path to independence; the dissolution of the Supreme Soviet and transformation of the legislative branch; the adoption of the 1995 Constitution; the introduction of the tenge; the period of presidential decree-led reforms; privatization; the relocation of the capital; economic growth in the early 2000s; and the development of Kazakhstan’s oil and gas infrastructure.

REVISITING THE RECENT PAST

The volume argues that Kazakhstan’s modern history deserves the same rigorous scholarly attention as more distant historical periods. Drawing on expert debate, primary sources, and interdisciplinary analysis, it reconstructs the context in which major political and economic decisions were made—and preserves perspectives that risk being lost with time.
